Driver tweaks

For the most part, the Drivers that are posted by HP are the best source available.
There are a few items that have, in my opinion, better, yet still trustworthy options.

First, the USB 3.0
HP Lists Firmware 3.0.2.1, while others have 3.0.2.5 available.  I've found that companies won't publish a firmware update without good reason, and while I've not found a writeup about the new features in 3.0.2.5 vs 3.0.2.1, Lenovo thought it was worthwhile to publish for their 15" workstation (the W510) and its kin.  Get the Lenovo update here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-75165

HP Lists driver version 1.0.18 as the best available option.  I grabbed 2.0.20.0 from Asus

Intel bits
The single biggest is the Matrix Storage Manager/Rapid Storage Tech.
HP *still* uses the 8.x line, while Intel is up to 10.1.0.1008.
The main benefit of the 9.x and 10.x versions is support for TRIM
HP also references an older version of the base chipset software (aka inf update)
The 8540w uses a 5 Series chipset, so the inf update and the RST are available from here

Lastly, video - I'm one of the few who opted for the AMD/ATI offering, so I can't speak to how the nVidia drivers posted by HP compare with drivers posted by anyone else (including nVidia), but, on the ATI/AMD front, AMD posted newer bits directly, and they call out the FirePro M5800 by name, so I'm running their update (8.773.1.1), over HP's dated version (8.743.3.7).

In general, Lenovo seems to be doing a better of job of getting updates for their 2010 15" workstation out to their community - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-74582
A surprising number of devices are shared between the 2, so experiment (at your own risk) with newer drivers from them.
